UMUC 2018 Spring Career Fair Recap

UMUC Career Services recently hosted more than 1,300 attendees for its in-person career fair on March 7 and its virtual career fair on March 14. Students and alumni attended the events from various locations, ranging from Maryland to California, with the opportunity to connect with national companies.

The in-person career fair took place at the College Park Marriott Hotel in Adelphi, Maryland, and featured 51 employers. Nearly 730 UMUC students and alumni attended. Attendees connected face-to-face with recruiters who had immediate and future job openings. Among the companies in attendance were: General Dynamics IT and Mission Systems, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Prince George’s County Government, FEMA, CACI, and U.S. Secret Service, to name a few. The event also highlighted three sponsors including: GCubed Enterprises,  eGlobal Tech, and a combined sponsorship with AccelerEd, HelioCampus, and UMUC Ventures. The attending companies had career opportunities in cybersecurity, IT, healthcare administration, finance, accounting, and more. During the event, attendees and recruiters had the opportunity to virtually exchange resumes, business cards, and contact information through use of the career fair event app, Scanshake, allowing all parties to follow up directly.

New this year, the Scanshake mobile app allowed students and alumni to access tips to prepare for the fair, a list of participating employers and the open jobs they were looking to fill, and directions to the event. The app also enabled job-seekers to populate their profile with data including their resume, LinkedIn profile, and photo. When meeting with potential employers, the candidate could present his or her unique QR code to the employer to scan and save all the candidate’s information on the spot, and employers could also exchange their contact information.

For those who could not attend in-person, preferred connecting online, or both, UMUC’s Career Services team also hosted a Virtual Career Fair sponsored by Sophos that featuring 61 employers, and more than 725 UMUC students and alumni attendees. Students and alumni had the opportunity to chat virtually with employers such as Ernst & Young, DXC Technology, Lunarline, and CSRA. Recruiters were given the opportunity to select resumes from the event and initiate private chats with attendees based on their qualifications. Some recruiters identified strong candidates from the event through sorting resumes and, as a result, scheduled follow-up interviews.

Bonnie Gray, a manager with Minority Access who participated in the virtual event, noted, “The virtual fair was wonderful.  I was able to interact with students and also receive more than 30 resumes. I was able to receive lots of resumes that match some of our summer internship positions.”

The UMUC Career Services team will continue to track success from the in-person and online event, and will work to connect more students and alumni with employers that have opportunities that match their skillset.
