Job seekers are encouraged to take advantage of every opportunity to meet and network with HR managers and recruiters from prospective employers, because getting in front of a recruiter may increase your chances of landing a position with an organization. Therefore, on November 15, UMUC’s Office of Career Services will host a Virtual Recruiter Session with Navy Federal Credit Union, eGlobal Tech, Mar Inc., FirstData and more. These premier employers are looking for talented UMUC students and alumni to fill open positions at each company.
To boost your chances of success and make an impression to a hiring manager – even in an online platform – here are a few guidelines to follow:
Spend time learning about the employers.
It may not seem important, but taking the time to learn more about each company and the open positions that fit your background and skillset will demonstrate how serious you are about your job search and that you have a strong interest in working for that company. When you can clearly articulate how good a fit you are for a specific job position and can explain why you want to work there, employers will take notice.
Develop tailored resumes for each application.
Virtual recruitment platforms allow attendees the option of uploading their resume when they register. When you do this, you are allowing the recruiter the opportunity review your resume in advance. To assist in preparing your resume, log into CareerQuest to access the Resunate tool. This web-based software program allows you to upload your resume and automatically evaluate and revise it based on the job description you provide. To access Resunate:
- Previous Resunate Users– Visit http://resunate.com/ and sign on using the username and password you created.
- New Resunate Users – Click here to submit the online request form to create a free Resunate account. Check your inbox (or SPAM folder) for an email from Resunate with your username and password.
Perfect your pitch.
The goal of a Virtual Recruiter Session is to chat one-on-one with recruiters. You will be “meeting” recruiters through a chat function, so well-written communication should be top priority. For example, you will want to be sure to write in full sentences and avoid slang and emoticons. A written elevator pitch should provide a brief introduction about who you are, details about your educational and professional background, and what you types of opportunities you are interested in. It should be brief and to the point.
For example: “Hi, my name is_______. I am a graduate/student/alumnus(a) from UMUC. I have done some research on your website and am interested in the ________ position with your company/agency.”
Prepare a few questions to ask each recruiter to take advantage of the time you have to build rapport with them. In addition, don’t forget to take detailed notes during the chat.
Register for the Virtual Recruiter Session.
You will be required to register in advance for the Virtual Recruiter Session and you will want to upload a resume as part of creating your profile. While you are logged into the platform you can view the names of the companies attending the fair. To register for the recruiter session, click here.
Remember to get contact information from each recruiter. Most of them will give you their contact information so you can easily email them to follow up on job opportunities in the future. Within 48 hours of the Virtual Recruiter Session, write a targeted thank you letter. Reiterate your interest and why you are a good candidate. Enclose another copy of your resume.
