Get to Know Washington Nationals, Advanced Systems Development, Sony, and Maryland Air National Guard

University of Maryland University College’s (UMUC) Career Services and Alumni Relations team hosted its monthly Recruiter Session on November 15, 2016 with more than 140 attendees both in-person and online. Employers present at the event included the Washington Nationals Club, Advanced Systems Development, Sony, and Maryland National Air Guard.  The event was hosted at the UMUC Academic Center in Largo and online and the attendees were able to gain insight about the organizations and the work culture. 

The event was moderated by UMUC Associate Vice President of Stateside Military Operations Cheryl Harris. Amongst the panelists included Washington Nationals Human Resource Manager Alan Gromest, Advanced Systems Development Process Improvement Subject Matter Expert David Nawrocki, and Maryland Air National Guard Lt. Col Andrew Wonpat. Sony Recruiter Kerry Stotz joined the speed networking event later in the program.

Gromest shared insight about the Washington Nationals organization and spoke about the need to be passionate about one’s work rather than just sports. Other recruiters also shared their need for dedicated professionals who enjoy helping customers.   

The panel discussion allowed UMUC students and alumni to learn about the hiring needs and skills required at each organization. After the panel, the in-person and online attendees were able to ask questions pertaining to their individual needs. Nawrocki, a UMUC alum noted, “My UMUC moment is today being able to come back and hire UMUC students and alumni to fill my open positions.”

The second part of the event included the speed networking component which allowed each in-person attendee the opportunity to connect directly with a recruiter and share their resume. The online attendees were allowed to submit their resumes to the recruiters as well and have access to the recruiters’ contact information for additional questions and feedback.
