October Recruiter Session with General Dynamics Missions Systems, T. Rowe Price, Deutsche Bank, SC3, and Maryland Air National Guard

Last night, UMUC’s Career Services team hosted its cybersecurity Recruiter Session with more than 120 attendees both in-person and online. Employers present at the event included General Dynamics Mission Systems, T. Rowe Price, Deutsche Bank, SC3 and Maryland National Air Guard. The event was hosted at the UMUC Academic Center in Largo and online. The event gave attendees information and insight into the various career opportunities and work culture within the cybersecurity departments.

The event began with an interactive industry panel discussion moderated by UMUC Cybersecurity Graduate School Program Chair Mansur Hasib. Amongst the panelists were Dez Patterson, corporate recruiter with General Dynamics Mission Systems, Richard Stevens, information security manager with T. Rowe Price, Ed Covert, vice president of Cybersecurity Architecture with Deutsche Bank, Kelly Sarley, recruitment relationship manager with SC3 and Lt. Col Andrew Wonpat, with the Maryland Air National Guard.

Mansur began the panel by encouraging the recruiters to share insight about the skills sought after within their respective organization and what to expect when applying for various career opportunities. During the questions and answers component, each recruiter shared different perspectives within their responses.  One noteworthy comment from the panelists included alumnus Ed Covert, “We typically don’t require high level certifications for our positions. We recruit people with experience, who enjoy the field and have passion, which is part of why I chose to recruit from my alma mater UMUC. ”

Shortly after the panel, UMUC Assistant Vice President of Career Development Francine Blume introduced the speed networking component of the event with the in-person attendees allowing for additional questions for each of the recruiters on the open job opportunities at each company. The networking component also gave each in-person attendee the opportunity to connect directly with a recruiter to practice their interview pitch. The online attendees were allowed to submit their resumes to the recruiters as well and have access to the recruiters contact information for additional questions and feedback.

Lt. Col Wonpat shared a few comments about the event:  “We connected with some great candidates from the event who we’d like to move forward in the process. We hope to schedule some next steps very soon.”
