What is InternPLUS?

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) students lead multifaceted lives juggling numerous priorities in locations all over the world.  InternPLUS is UMUC’s newest career initiative designed to help our students obtain “resume-able” experience.  Recent research suggests that employers prefer students to have both education AND experience in order to be competitive for employment after graduation, and InternPLUS was designed to help you gain that experience.

Internships, in the traditional sense, are full-time opportunities that are typically completed during the summer.  InternPLUS identifies different ways to get experience to include traditional, full-time internship opportunities as well as part-time opportunities to include  part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities, federal internship opportunities, and more.

How do you get started?  All of the resources for InternPLUS are located in CareerQuest, UMUC’s exclusive career portal for students and alumni.  Once you create a CareerQuest account, click on this link to access the InternPLUS tab.  From there, you will see several options:

  • I want to gain experience.
  • I want to earn academic credit.
  • I want to switch careers.
  • I want to advance in my career.

Choose the option that best matches your interests and needs, and you will be directed with step-by-step instructions for what you need to do to achieve your goal.

You can find our latest list of opportunities in the job/internship board on CareerQuest.  We also work with employers to attend our recruitment events to promote their internship opportunities.  These events occur almost every month and can be found on CareerQuest.

The tagline for InternPLUS is “Experience the Way You Need It.”  This program is unique to UMUC and was created to address the unique characteristics of our students.  With a little creativity and a lot of persistence, it is possible to gain experience the way you need it so you can reach your next career goal.
